Penhill Benefice - Thornton Rust

Penhill Benefice

Living and Sharing the Love of Jesus Christ in the Community

Thornton Rust Mission Room

A special place of worship -

This village is unique in the benefice - and in Wensleydale - in that it has had a Mission Room in a converted traditional barn since the late 19th century.

In 1894 Capt Francis Chapman and his family decided that the village should have an Anglican place of worship and so turned the top floor of one of their barns into a Mission Room.

This continues to be a special feature of the village and is much loved, cared for, maintained and supported by many of its residents.

Services -

There is an evensong service in the Mission Room on the fourth Sunday of each month. And this “Upper Room” hosts the Maundy Thursday service for the Benefice as well as being used by Wensley Deanery for quiet days.

It is part of Aysgarth church’s parish and so doesn’t have its own churchwarden. The local contact is Jackie Cook, 01969 663626.
